My Why
Tuesday 25th Aug For those who knew my Dad before dementia you would know how capable, adventurous and independent he was. Firefighter, white water kayaker, scuba diver, fisherman, camper, boater, sailer, mechanic, handyman and all time family man. But 12 years ago we started to loose little pieces of him. Dementia slowly stripped away his identity, who he was until all that is left now is a shell. Each part lost we have grieved, we miss with all our hearts. You notice the little things, like when his hugs changed.As each little part is lost in him our hearts break a little more.
Dad is now in his final stages of Dementia- Alzheimers. How long… we don’t know. All we know is we continue to show up for him, we continue to love him fiercely, we continue to miss him and grieve for the Dad that was and the Pop my children will miss growing up.
Our Dementia journey has not been easy, but services and research gave us hope and gives us hope for a better future, not just for my Dad but for all those people living with Dementia and for those who’s paths might one day start on their own dementia journey.
