I’m hosting a Cuppa to raise funds for all people living with dementia.

I’m hosting a Cuppa to support people living with dementia.

Every dollar raised helps make a difference to the 446,500 Australians living with dementia, and the families and friends who support them every day.

Help me reach my fundraising goal so together we can help ensure that no one faces dementia alone

Your donation could help Dementia Australia:

  • Provide free, confidential support through the National Dementia Helpline, available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
  • Deliver trusted dementia information and resources, including translations in multiple languages.
  • Expand our network of Memory Lane Cafés, where people living with dementia can connect, share experiences and enjoy meaningful moments together.
  • Fund vital research to improve care and work towards future breakthroughs.

Pop the kettle on. Let’s show up for dementia together.

Why Im hosting Cuppa for Dementia

Tuesday 18th Aug
I was first affected by dementia at a young age, around 8 or 9 years old. My great-nan, who I was very close to growing up, suffered with Alzheimers. I have many many fond memories of Nan, she was funny. I remember visiting her and the constant questions of "who are you?". Every visit broke our hearts trying to help Nan remember, or just going with whatever reality she had at the time. Eventually, Alzheimers took away her ability to eat and drink, it wasn't long until she perished, although it must have felt like forever and been excruciating for her. I still remember that day like it was yesterday...
Now, 30 odd years later and its almost like history repeating itself, only this time Im a little older, and the person with Dementia is my Oma (Nans daughter), who practically raised me. This woman, my Oma, has been by my side from the moment I was born - we have always been closer than a mother-daughter relationship. Watching the person who raised you slowly fade away has got to be the hardest thing Ive ever been through. My Oma doesn't have any good memories left, only moments in life that broke her. She no longer remembers her wonderful late-husband of 37 years, only her ex-husband who was horrible to her - some days she even thinks he's still around. There's no recollection of who I am, let alone our 39 years together. Although I visit every week, my heart breaks a little every visit as she never really remembers who I really am - her granddaughter and best friend - some days Im her niece, some days Im the lady that brings fish and chips, and some days I'm just another worker with an unfamiliar face. But one thing always remains - she has a smile on her face by the time I leave.
I can't even begin to imagine how terrifying it must feel for someone with dementia to feel so confused, lost and alone all the time. And that is why Im hosting a tea party, a Cuppa for Dementia - because nobody should have to go through this, especially alone.
