I’m hosting a Cuppa to raise funds for all people living with dementia.

It’s time to talk about dementia

Almost half a million Australians are living with dementia today and over 1.7 million people are involved in their care.

But we don’t talk about it enough, It can feel too hard to raise. We worry about saying the wrong thing. And it’s often wrongly seen as just a part of getting older.

But silence has a cost - delayed diagnoses and treatment, carers who feel isolated, and people who never learn that help is here.

When we talk about dementia, we can:

  • Improve support and services for Australians
  • Improve understanding of dementia
  • Reduce stigma and discrimination

My Updates

2020

Monday 24th Aug
Here is my reason... my sweet Mum Chrissy.
It was around covid lockdown time in 2020 and Mum lived up the North Coast at the age of 67.
I hadn’t seen her for maybe 10 months but talked on the phone regularly. I noticed changes in her voice/language, I guess vaguer than usual. I would say what have you been up to and she would use phrases like what haven’t I been up to ! She often had her neighbour visiting who she would refer to or answers in the background. But as someone who never knew what Dementia truly was I didn’t know what this was but knew this wasn’t my usual Mum.
My sisters agreed she wasn’t quite right so I offered to do the trip up and surprise Mum but it was me who was truly surprised. I walked into her house and everything was out of the drawers and in neat piles around the floor and on benches which I later realised was so she could find things. She had lost alot of weight, maybe 2-3 dress sizes.
I spent the week there observing her and working out what to do. I did what any normal person does and googled the symptoms I could see and results showed me Dementia Australia might be a place to call so I did. They were kind, helpful and gave me a plan of attack. I will always be grateful for their help along the journey.
I also want people to talk more about Dementia - what it is, experiences, feelings, help.
Let's Talk!
